What is considered a crisis?A crisis is a critical moment when a person’s mental health or substance use issues escalate to the point of severe distress, risk of harm, or significant disruption in daily life. The following are common examples of such crises. One does not need to be previously diagnosed in order to be experiencing a crisis. Anxiety and Panic Attacks: A person suddenly feels overwhelming anxiety in a crowded place, leading to hyperventilation and an intense fear of losing control. Depression and Suicidal Ideation: An individual begins withdrawing from loved ones and planning how to end their life, or they feel persistently sad and lose interest in daily activities without developing a self-harm plan. Substance Use Withdrawal: A person trying to reduce their alcohol consumption starts shaking, sweating, feeling nauseous, and is having difficulty caring for themselves. Psychotic Episodes: Someone starts hearing voices and believes they are being watched or followed, leading to paranoia and disorganized thinking. Self-Harm: A teenager experiencing emotional pain begins cutting their arms in an attempt to manage overwhelming feelings of sadness and anger. Acute Stress Reaction: After experiencing a stressful day at work, someone feels jittery, on edge, has trouble concentrating, and is finding it difficult to manage daily tasks. Manic Episodes: An individual with bipolar disorder suddenly engages in risky behaviors, such as excessive spending or reckless driving, believing they have limitless energy and abilities. Eating Disorder Crises: Someone with anorexia nervosa begins excessively restricting food intake and skipping meals, leading to significant weight loss but no immediate medical danger. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) Flashbacks: A military veteran hears fireworks and suddenly believes they are back in a combat zone, reliving traumatic events with intense fear and anxiety. Aggression: During a disagreement, someone becomes verbally aggressive, raising their voice and making threats, but does not become physically violent.
